USDOT Number Display -

When it comes to DOT numbers, vehicles registered under this system are required to prominently display their assigned number on both the left and right sides of the vehicle. The number must be presented in high-contrasting colors to ensure visibility and legibility, even from a distance of at least 50 feet. This measure is in place to enhance safety and compliance standards for vehicles operating under a DOT number.

Who Needs to Have a USDOT Number Display?

Eliminates the marking regulations of the former Interstate Commerce Commission. Requires all interstate motor carriers to display the USDOT number. Requires that CMVs be marked with the legal name, or a single trade name, of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation.

This information must match the information on the motor carrier's Form MCS-150. Motor carriers currently displaying an ICC-MC number have two years to comply with affixing the USDOT number to both sides of their CMVs currently in service. New and repainted CMVs must be properly marked upon placement in service. Motor carriers have five years to comply with the additional requirements to display the legal name or single trade name on their CMVs currently in service.

All new interstate motor carriers must submit a Form MCS-150 to the FMCSA before commencing operations. The printed MCS-150 will be removed from the FMCSRs, and instructions on obtaining the form will be provided by the FMCSA.

The final rule does not mandate the marking of motor vehicles with the city and state.

Driveaway provision: The requirements regarding removable marking devices will be retained and integrated into 390.21.

Special notes for new motor carriers: Those that started operations PRIOR TO the effective date have 90 days to submit their MCS-150. Those that commence operations ON OR AFTER the effective date must file the MCS-150 before starting operations, mark the power units of their CMVs before placing them into service, and operate them on public highways.
