UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) Info -
Under the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) Program established by 49 USC 14505a, companies that transport goods across state lines or dispatch drivers for work purposes must fulfill the annual state tax requirement.
Why Is UCR Compliance Important for Carriers?
UCR (Unified Carrier Registration)
The UCR has replaced the Single State Registration System. Any motor carrier needing a DOT Number must also have a UCR. This annual fee is obligatory for those operating commercial vehicles in international or interstate commerce. Register with a participating state, typically your base state where you primarily reside. If your state is not part of the UCR, register through a neighboring state. Under UCR 49 USC 14505a, any company sending drivers across state lines for work must pay the yearly state tax. The fee is determined by your fleet's size, encompassing carriers like for-hire, private, and exempt. Additionally, freight forwarders, brokers, and leasing companies must register under the UCR unless they are already established as a Motor Carrier. Failure to pay the annual fee can have serious implications for your business. In a participating state, you risk being stopped, and your truck impounded until the fee is settled. Non-compliance may result in fines and penalties.
